1st June 2019 – Wharfedale Trail Half Marathon

1st June 2019 – Wharfedale Trail Half Marathon

Report from Nicky Gifford

I had some unfinished business with this race, as last year I had to wave Sara, Hannah, Richard (who took my place) and Geoff off, due to an Glute med tendinopathy that kept my off running for most of last year.

This year Geoff, Sara, Martin and myself set off to do battle with the hills! The race description states ,“a great day out in some of Wharfedales finest scenery with over 2,000 feet of ascents the route follows well established footpaths, including the Dalesway and Mastiles Lane and for those with time to take in the fabulous scenery the views from Scott Gate, Mastiles and Boss Moor are quite breathtaking.”

The race started out with what looked to be sunny conditions, but by the time we were, WALKING up Mastiles lane, it had started to rain and continued for the rest of the race. The rain from the day and the rain from the previous week made the bogs on the last mile or 2 very boggy which is great fun on tired legs.

For all my moaning it can’t be that bad as it’s the only half Marathon I’ve done 3 times and I can thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to try out a trail race for the first time.

First Male: Phil Marsden in 1:25:15

First Female: Zanthe Wray 1:35:36

A speedy Martin Springer was first for Otley AC coming in at  2:03:35.

First lady for Otley AC Sara Richards in 2:31:29, she is a machine as having raced on Monday in Austwick Amble. Next in was Geoff Gifford 2:36:25 a PB by 18 minutes and myself 2:36:26 a PB by 8 minutes.

  1. Great results! I’m hoping my glute issue doesn’t keep me off as long. It’s certainly a real pain in the ass!

  2. Congratulations to Nicky G. for the new PB. by 8 minutes crossing the line in a super time of 2.36 , and as well I enjoyed to read the short report from the Wharfedale Trail , and Congratulations also to Geoff G. for the new PB. by 18 minutes .Martin S. was indeed fast finishing in a good 2.03 . I agree with Nicky G. that Sara R. is a race machine , she finished the tough 13 miles in a brilliant time of 2.31.
