Report from Andrew Robertshw
I’ve done a slightly longer version of this one when Bingley Harriers had a weekend of 3 races in 3 days, the Saturday race was a very similar route to the Blackfell race. This year it was an English and Yorkshire Champs. race, so pre-entry only, however a couple of weeks ago 20 or so entries were released, so in a sports bar in Keswick after a couple of pints I entered…
Come race day I was content to take it steady, enjoy the race and not be too bothered about my finishing position or time, which I can definitely say I did.
The unmarked route basically goes up and over the Great Whernside ridge, finishing with a tussocky, off piste traverse to Hag Dyke and fast grassy descent, see map.
Ilkley Harriers had a good day with Tom Adams taking a clear win ahead of Jack Wood in a new course record of 1:14:28. Kelli Roberts, Helm Hill finished 1st lady in 51st in 1:28:15.
I was the only Otley vest present and finished in 101st in 1:34:57, 2nd claimer Tanya Shepherd 2:17:41, 255th.
See a full set of results on the sportident site here, the splits make for interesting reading, for me anyway! If only it had been just a race between checkpoints 2 & 3 I would have done a lot better…
