Report from Tom Pomfrett:
The most recent meeting of the Otley AC fell and van lovers club was a joint effort with our friends from Horsforth Fellandale and took a handful of black, white, turquoise and blues to the tranquil Turner Hall Campsite in the Lake District’s Duddon Valley for the Turner Landscape Fell Race.
With partners, kids and dogs in tow we arrived on Friday and established a quiet corner of the campsite as base camp for the weekend. The race kicked off at midday on Saturday with the long slog up from the campsite to Grey Friar, made harder by a fierce sun beating down on our backs. From there we started picking off peaks on the long horseshoe leading around to Old Man of Coniston before a quick dip down and up to Dow Crag. I had a little panic here as I came across Tanya sitting on a rock having taken a detour and started to think I might be hallucinating. Luckily it wasn’t a mirage and my mind was in fact tired but functioning.
From Dow Crag it’s a grassy, mainly downhill ridge to White Maiden before a steep boggy descent past the old mine to the campsite. Tom Lynch led home the team with a good spread of runners across the field.
The winner was John Heneghan from P&B in 01:37:10
First Lady was Ailish Graham from Wharfedale in 01:49:11
20th – Tom Lynch – 01:59:06
35th – Graham Lake – 02:14:59
73rd – Tom Pomfrett – 02:35:30
After some post-race rehydration we evacuated base camp down to the river for a “who has the pastiest body” competition. I think Tom Lynch won this too but I’m not sure as my eyesight hasn’t returned since looking at him…
