A belated note from Tony Walker
En route to spending a few splendid days in the south lakes I spotted a Wednesday evening 10k in Ulverston and as it was flat I thought that will do for me! It also turned out to be very wet so a perfect night for running. The route was an out and back following the coast road (although I didn’t see any sea!) with a small loop around the abbey. These days 10k’s stretch my stamina as the knees don’t like long runs, but then again I don’t really do any speed work so either way its not good!
Anyway the run was good and competitive and having passed a few early on I remained in a similar position for the middle miles (apart from the 1st lady who came storming past and ended up 90 seconds in front of me) but then the aforementioned stamina (or lack of it!!) kicked in and a couple passed me in the last mile but I held on for 41mins 21 secs which is about par based on my current fitness. Relatively small field but a bit of quality as I was miles behind the other vets so only 4th V55. Also miles behind the 1st V60 a guy called Bob Atkinson who did 35.06. Wow. Yes 60. Get him doped tested now. Fabulous effort.
Well organised and racing is still fun!
