Report from Tom Lynch:
Otley have put a team in the ‘Hodgsons’ every year since 2003 although apparently we’ve been flying under the radar, as a lot of people I talked to seemed to think it was our first year, I’m blaming it on the black vest!
This is a prestigious fell relay in the Lake District that only a select few clubs get to enter on a one in one out basis due to the limited number of teams (70) allowed in. Many of those entries are multiple teams from the larger clubs such as Keswick and Wharfedale.
For Otley AC our team was:
Leg 1 Ross McCall + Tom Lynch
Leg 3 Graham Lake + Derek Fuller
The relays follow a route around Patterdale, starting off from the playing fields in Patterdale, Leg 1 takes in the heights around Angle Tarn before a descent down to Hartstop. Leg 2 slogs up High Street, across via Thornthwaite Crag and Stony Cove Pike to Kirkstone Pass. Leg 3 is a stiff climb up Red Screes, across to Dove Crag, and a ridiculous descent (my favourite leg) to Sykeside Campsite with the final leg climbing back up the same way via Hart and St Sunday Crags to descend back down to the start in Patterdale.
Otley came in 52nd over all, in a total time of 5:13:30, with leg times of: Leg 1 – 44:42, 2 – 1:39:59, 3 – 1:09:02, 4 – 1:39:36, full results are up here.
