Saturday 19th October – British Athletics Fell and Hill Relay Championships 2019

Report from Tom Lynch:

This year’s British Fell relays took place in the hills surrounding the Derwent reservoir in the Peak District, with the start field located right at the foot of the impressive dam. Otley had two teams again this year, a men’s and women’s team, with the competition for entering teams in the race again being tight this year. The race consisted of a 6 person team with two shorter solo legs, a longer paired leg, and an equal length navigational paired leg.

Otley’s line up was:

Men Women
Leg 1 (7.65km 360m climb) Ben Cousen Sharron Smith
Leg 2 (12.3km 484m climb) Andrew Robertshaw
Richard Smith
Vicky Stainburn
Becky Harpur
Leg 3 (nav leg) Liam Dunne
Tom Lynch
Laura McCabe
Laura Martin
Leg 4 (7.85 km 375m climb) Rob Grant Caron Ralph

The race centre itself was difficult to access, requiring a journey by bus, but we managed to get a tent up as a base, shared with Fellandale. This was in case of bad weather, but on the day, the rain held off, and in the end the sun came out for some of the legs.

So generally good running conditions, apart from the (not unexpected) Peak District bogs in fine condition!

I think everyone enjoyed the day, a new experience for Rob having only recently got a pair of fell shoes, a testing day out for Rich realising it’s not at all easy trying to hang on to Andrew over fell terrain, and a welcome return to club racing for Laura Martin. No serious mishaps, and the nav leg stayed clear, only a small detour for 1 checkpoint it was a good result all round.

The winners on the day were Keswick AC Men’s A, first women were Helm Hill Women’s A, Otley AC Men came in 62nd overall, and Otley AC Women were 170th, and 30th women’s team.

  1. Thanks for producing the report, Tom, and for organising everything. Thanks to everyone for putting up with my pre-fell race paranoia and nerves – seems I had nothing to worry about! And thanks for all the lends of kit! Does this count in the RoY competition or will I have to get my feet muddy again?!

  2. Thank you to Andrew R. for posting an indeed interesting Strava on Youtube , I enjoyed the video , it was astonishing to see the different choice of routes that the teams took , whichever direction chosen it would have made a significant difference on the final result . Well done to the Otley AC teams for the impressive performances , especially to Sharron S. on leg 1 with 360m of climb and to Caron R. on leg 4 with 375m of ascent . Welcome back to Laura M. she is an excellent runner . Well done to Rob G. for his first challenging (very hard) hill race . Well done all .

  3. Nice one Tom and Vicky for organising…enjoyable event as always and some top descents! Well done Rob and a special mention to Richard for not appearing on YouTube with this years Fell exploits!
