Sunday 27th October – Abbey Dash

Report from Billy

Following the heavy rain of the last few days Sunday morning brought a bit of sunshine although it was rather chilly.

OAC were out in numbers for the annual flat fast Abbey Dash 10k which takes you along Kirkstall Road to Kirkstall Abbey & back. Not an exciting course but is renowned for PB potential and the crowds are usually large & loud. Whilst waiting in our pens we were greeted with an unforecasted rain shower which is not what you want on a chilly October morning. I knew I wasn’t going to get a PB as it was only a week since doing the Yorkshire Marathon and set off at a steady pace. My first km was my fastest (Mainly because it is downhill most of the way) and then settled in to a comfortable pace that would see me do about 55 mins. My only worry was that I would run out of steam but managed to keep a steady pace and finish in 55:02.

The race was won by Omar Ahmed in 28:38.

Other finishers for Otley were (all chip times) Rob Grant 36:19, Graham Lake 38:36, Jenson Brogden 38:57 (Pb), Sara Elliott 44:17 (Pb), Rachael Wright 45:31, Paul Tranter 43:39, James Dobson 46:13, Sharon Kenyon 48:46, Mary Hampshire 48:34, Verity Glover 50:22 (Pb), Catherine Dobson 54:31 (Pb), Martin Gaskin 54:07, Pam Tranter 56:09, Sarah Belt 58:10 (Pb), Sue Green 1:02:36, Lorna Langdon 1:03:55, Natasha Whittaker 1:07:27 and Sarah Waights 1:07:49.

  1. Great turnout and performances. You say flat, but as well as that tiny downhill to help set you off, there is also that tiny kick up at the end, which matters when you’re flat out

  2. Thanks for doing the report, Billy. Well done to everyone, especially those who achieved PBs. That rain shower was weird, seemed almost man-made!

  3. I agree with Tamara W. that it was a great turnout and performances , especially the junior Jenson B. finishing in a fast 38.57 a Pb . Also a Pb for Sara E. finishing in a brilliant 44.17 . Pb for Verity G. finishing in a splendid 50.22 . Catherine D. did really well crossing the line in a solid 54.31 a Pb . Sarah B. too did a great 10k finishing in a robust 58.10 a Pb. Well done all .
