Saturday 8th February – Winter Half Tour of Bradwell

Saturday 8th February – Winter Half Tour of Bradwell

Report from Matt Podd

As we were staying in Buxton for the weekend with my Mother in Law, I looked for a race to get me out of the house and picked on this. A BL Fell race of 16.8 miles (though most people thought it was more like 19 miles) with 3478ft of climbing, organised by an old friend of mine.

Registration and preparation took place in a comfortable village sports pavilion where I met a team from Wetherby who had come down for it. Though it was a cold start it turned into a lovely sunny day with the Peak District looking lovely. We all trooped off to the local village green for kit check and the start.

Off we went out of the village to run past a ‘scenic’ cement works and then up a long hill into the countryside. Down Cave Dale and into Castleton with the lovely Peveril Castle lit up in the sun. Out of Castleton and on to Lose Hill. A lovely descent down into the Edale valley and off uphill again.

Unfortunately, at this point I and a group of runners lost the course and did a bit of a variation which added a mile or so and a steep hill. However, we managed to get back on course and evade an angry farmer. So on to contour below Win Hill on a nice track with great views of the Derwent Valley and a long stretch in woods. Back down the valley on an old railway which seemed endless.

A final huge climb on road and good tracks led us over Shatton Moor and a very steep, slippery descent back to Bradwell. I was feeling strong on this bit and managed to pass many flagging runners. A final run down the home strait through the village to the finish at the sports pavilion. Free tea and cakes awaited us.

A good trip out on a nice day visiting a lot of the Peak District; perhaps a little too much tarmac but a lot of climbing.

  1. I almost came as well to do the Half Tour of Bradwell because since I did a fell race Up the Nab last year near Glossop I like all the district of Buxton because as well it is all new to me , but I decided that I was too old to do 16.8 mile . The report from Bradwell by former President Matt P. is really good and gives me an idea of what the fell race looked like . Matt did a massive performance finishing in a great time of 3.58 for 16.8 miles adding the extra mile for the wrong turn and counting the big hill as well . Well done indeed .
