Sunday 27th September – Kirkstall Abbey 7 Junior Races

It was a foggy start to Sunday with Otley AC Juniors this weekend as Holly Davey, Jenson Brogden and Aston Brogden competed in the Kirkstall Abbey Junior Race as part of the Leeds Junior Race Series 2015-2016.

Aston was first up at 9am with the “Mad Monk Meander” a two lap fun run around the Abbey trying to catch the Monk and the Nun.  Aston absolutely smashed the race leading from the start and came in First Place, even beating Alan the Monk!!

Jenson and Holly then competed in the U17 2 mile race.  The fog had now lifted and despite the wet grass on the off-path sections the pair did very well indeed.  Jenson came 4th and Holly 7th overall, 2nd female finisher.  Rather interestingly they both gained PB’s in the race, Holly beat her time from last year by nearly 3 minutes!!  The pair have been training well together over the past few months and taking on board the guidance and expertise of the coaches and this is really starting to show in their race day performances.  Keep up the good work!!

12th September-Junior and Mini Great North Runs

Well what an amazing weekend we had in Newcastle!

On Friday night Jenson Brogden, Aston Brogden and Holly Davey travelled to Newcastle to prepare for running in the Great North Mini and Junior races the next day.

On the morning of the races the weather was awful! Aston was first to run at 10am in the first wave of the Mini Run for ages 3-8. He was cold and wet as he lined up on the start line but then so were all the other kids! Despite being so far from home he was in good company as he stood on the line next to a boy from Skyrac! The gun went and he was on it straight away and pushed himself all the way around this 1.5k course. Hard work pays off and Aston did us proud as he came over the line 3rd boy in 5.34! Amazing!

So after all the excitement of Aston’s podium finish it was Holly next to show us her stuff! It was fair to say the weather was now worsening so poor Holly was going to get wet! Holly ran in the 11-12 year olds band of the girls junior race and she was awesome! On this massive stage Holly came 29th out of 429 girls in a time of 17.52.

Finally at 4.10pm after a long day but with the sun now shining It was Jenson’s turn. He was running in the 11-12  year olds band of the boys junior race and he was chomping at the bit to get going! He too did us proud and even though he was only 11 in July he held his own and came 44th out of 495 runners in a time of 16.58!

The weekend was brilliant and a spot of spectating at the Great North run on Sunday gave the juniors a chance to see how the Elite do it!
