Washburn Valley Relay – Friday 13th July 2012
Also new to 2010 was the Junior Washburn Valley Relay (4 x 1.11 mile legs).
The event is for teams of three people and each stage is between 3 and 4 miles in length.
This event, based upon an idea by the late Otley A.C. member Phil Dean, has been held regularly since the early 1990′s.
The relay is now split into three different routes averaging approximately 3.75 miles each and takes place on public footpaths, bridleways and a small amount of road in the scenic Washburn Valley.
Every stage starts and finishes at the Yorkshire Water car park at Fewston – there is only limited car parking hence please do try and car share on the night.
In 2003 and 2004, the race was staged over 5 legs but this was reduced to 4 legs in 2005 because slower teams were finishing in the dark and for similar reasons in 2008 it was decided to drop the previous Stage 1 and hence from 2008 the previous Stage 2 (straight out across the dam road) is now Stage 1, previous Stage 3 (around Fewston) is now Stage 2 and the previous final Stage 4 (around Swinsty) is now the final Stage 3.
The race is partially marshalled and there is only limited marking of the course so it is essential to recce the route beforehand. There are three trophies, namely the Tony Allen Trophy for the winning male team (presently held by Otley A.C.), the Joyce Smith Trophy for the winning female team (presently held by Otley A.C.) and The Divan Centre Cup for the first mixed team including at least one lady (presently held by Idle A.C.). The presentation takes place after the race in Fewston car park with subsequent adjournment to The Sun Inn, Norwood.
